I’m so excited yay so you are the author of a book called beggar’s daughter and you’re also a blogger right now it’s kind of how it started exactly okay so in your book you just kind of go there you are super transparent about your pornography addiction can you just share with some of those who are watching who may not have had it you know had a chance to get your book share your story you know how did you become addicted to pornography what was the the turning point for you and how have you been able to walk in freedom since right so I was I was exposed to pornography when I was 13 the internet was new yeah but I was researching for school actually I was researching for a science project and on this I call it the YouTube of 1999 there was amongst all of these scientific videos there was a porn video and so I started to to watch videos there started going to the chat rooms I got a mention in what’s called cyber sex where you’re chatting back and forth with people in chat rooms yeah and by the time I was finishing high school so about four years later it had taken over my life I want come home from school and that was the first thing I would do would go in and and watch porn on my mom’s computer I remembered when I couldn’t stop yeah as a senior in high school my grades were suffering it was harder to stay on top of my life and I thought I need to get this under control I didn’t want to stop I just wanted to to control it better yeah and I couldn’t and that’s when I realized that I was really in trouble I began to look for help and everything was for men yeah and I thought am I the only woman in the world that managed to get herself into this match because I nothing was for for women at all mm-hm so I went off to college and I thought I can get help at college because they deal with young women like me as surely I’m not alone I went off to college I did get caught at college I was continuing to use while at a Christian College yeah and they trekked internet whoo there and found out that I was using and they pulled me into the dean’s office showed me a printed report of all of the sites that I had visited and then they said we know this wasn’t you because women don’t have this problem Wow and I remember thinking what is wrong with me because I obviously did have this problem and I thought you know what there’s got to be some women who enjoy this and those the women who are in pornography so I was 17 years old at a Christian College and I believed that the only thing I was ever going to be worth was being a porn star and so I actually tried to get into the porn industry when I was 17 didn’t work out because it’s not like applying to the local grocery store thank goodness like how it works so I ended up the next fall I ended up at Bible College and I say that’s because that’s where all the aspiring porn actresses go but god is just so faithful and he is directed and redirected my path and it was there at that college that they had a women’s meeting and the Dean of women said we know some of you in this room struggle with pornography Wow and we’re gonna help you amen and there was even freedom in that moment of realizing that I wasn’t alone and I wasn’t beyond grace and so I did have an opportunity to confess that this was a struggle that I had so I went through years of probably two years of counseling and working through it and trying to find true freedom from pornography yeah and it took time and I think it’s still a healing process that was well over ten years know that that happened and I would say that I found freedom we had two years yeah it took time yeah but the healing still happened so I’ve been sharing my stories what were some of the lies that you think you believe about yourself and others and did it affect your relationships you know talk a little bit about that I think one of the the big moments for me I wouldn’t say that in watching pornography I learned all of these lies but that moment when I was 17 where I thought I don’t have a choice I have to become a porn star and where a man who I never that mm-hmm had asked me for pictures and that moment when I gave him that was a profound moment because pornography is the only thing that a person can become so a drug addicts cannot become drugs an alcoholic cannot become alcohol but a porn addict can become pornography Wow and something very profound and damaging happens when a person becomes a thing yeah and I think that’s one of the things that pornography subversive women that you you are doesn’t matter it’s what you can give to somebody else and how you perform for someone else well let’s talk about the fact that a lot of people don’t think pornography or being addicted to pornography is a female thing what’s almost dangerous about still having the narrative that it’s not is how it’s affecting today’s youngest women yeah so we have in the church a bit of an imbalance where like our moms would be like you did what yeah their pornography to them was like the back of the video rental store like behind the curtain yep or the the channels on TV I had to pay for yeah that’s what it was for them but then you have today’s young girls where it’s in their hands yeah it’s it’s in their phones and I remember this is about six years ago I was speaking at an event sharing my story because when I first shared my story it was like all taboo a big deal you know yeah women do what and this teenage girls wasn’t even teenager she was 12 went to her friend’s mom and said I don’t understand why this girl is even here every girl watches porn and we’re still in this we need to talk about women struggling with pornography and not realizing that our girls are very sure they’re now like we’ve missed this here we’ve got to amp up the conversation yeah but get past this it’s a guy thing and move on to no this is just a human thing we’re all sexual beings we all have sexual drives and pornography it’s just taking advantage of that it’s taking advantage something that’s god-given and beautiful and it’s twisting it and it’s warping it and that’s what sin does yeah absolutely it’s doing it to men and to women it’s not a man only yeah so Jessica what advice do you have for people parents specifically who have found out that their kids have been exposed to porn it’s important for us off for parents to understand that it’s no longer a question of if your kid’s gonna be exposed to pornography but it’s a question of when if you need to take a minute and and step out of the room to get your composure that’s fine but if you freaked out in front of your child you’re communicating to them I am not capable of discussing this with you and that might be how you feel like I should not have to talk about pornography with my six-year-old little girl yeah but if she’s looking at it guess what you need to talk about it with her and you also don’t want to go kind of beyond where they are so if they’re six years old and I’ve just found this randomly and you happen to find out and then you start to launch into you know human trafficking and blah blah blah you have now scarred your own child so so kind of let them leave the conversation but what you’re doing is you’re communicating to your child you can have these conversations with me yeah and you have to do that because here’s what’s tricky about kids whoever introduces them to it first becomes the expert that they go to they don’t understand age they understand chronological order so even if you find it as a parent you’re going oh man I’m second but you’re not you’re able to bring wisdom into that conversation that they don’t already have and you’re able to show actually mom and dad know more yeah and you can come to us and you can talk to us and that’s the kind of door that you want to open Jessica again thank you so much for being with us for unhooked purity and a pornified world thank you again for just being bold and and just honest with your story and I know it’ll set people free so thank you thank you for having me thanks [Music] really good advice from Jessica Harris and I just want to let people know if you’re struggling with pornography if this is something you struggle with and secret no one knows you’re not alone first of all God knows okay second of all you are not the only person who struggles with this as you just heard from Jessica’s story you know it’s not just a male thing it’s a human thing but here’s the thing Jessica and when Jessica invited God into her mess into her addiction to pornography that’s when she really began to experience freedom from that sin addiction that addiction to pornography that she seemed its it seemed like it was a cycle she couldn’t break but there’s hope Jesus says come to me come to me all who are weary and all who are carrying heavy burdens because I will give you rest what are you carrying today that’s not meant for you are you carrying shame from the cycle of sin that you can’t seem to break and you’ve tried everything but nothing seems to work are you carrying trauma from your past what are you carrying today Jesus has come to me because he wants to set you free and there’s good news friend let me tell you Jesus died so he could set the captives free and if you are bound if you are in a prison today of pornography addiction of hooking up of masturbation whatever it looks like Jesus wants you to come to him today so that he can set you free freedom is waiting for you you have to make the choice to welcome him into your mess because he is willing he is able and he is ready to pour out his spirit on your life to transform your mind to transform your heart to transform your life so we’re gonna pray we’re gonna pray today and I want you to pray along with me to invite Jesus into your life like never before because there is freedom waiting for you so let’s pray Jesus say his name out loud Jesus I confess my sins to you god I repent of my sins and I want you to come into my life to transform my mind to cleanse my mind my heart my body appetites Jesus I believe that you died on that cross for me out of love you’ve resurrected and that resurrection
